What is a vestibular disorder?

If the room seems to spin when you turn over in bed, or you feel unsteady on your feet for no obvious reason, the cause is often your vestibular system — the inner-ear structure that governs balance and spatial orientation. When it's not working properly, even simple movements can trigger dizziness, imbalance, or a genuine spinning sensation known as vertigo.

How Vestibular Rehabilitation works

Vestibular rehabilitation uses individualized exercises and movement strategies to address balance, dizziness, and other vestibular concerns. At Care & Cure Physiotherapy, these techniques can be incorporated into a personalized physiotherapy treatment plan based on your symptoms, assessment, and functional goals.

What it treats?

  • Loss of balance and unsteadiness
  • Vertigo and spinning sensations
  • Nausea related to movement or position changes
  • BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)

What to expect at your visit

Your first appointment involves a detailed history and a series of balance and positional tests — some of which may briefly reproduce your dizziness, which is a normal (if unpleasant) part of pinpointing the cause. From there, we build a home exercise program alongside in-clinic treatment, since consistency between visits matters more with vestibular rehab than with most other physiotherapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some of them briefly can, since we're identifying which head positions trigger your symptoms — but this is controlled, expected, and short-lived.

BPPV sometimes resolves in one to two visits. Other balance disorders take longer and involve an ongoing home exercise component.

Source: Mayo Clinic notes that BPPV is one of the most common causes of vertigo and is generally very treatable once properly diagnosed.
