What Is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc occurs when the softer inner material of a spinal disc pushes through a weakened or damaged area of its tougher outer layer. Spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and help cushion the spine while allowing it to move.

A herniated disc can occur anywhere along the spine, although it is most common in the lower back. When a disc affects nearby nerves, it can cause symptoms that extend beyond the back itself, such as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or leg.

Not every herniated disc causes symptoms. The location of the disc and whether surrounding nerves are affected can influence what a person experiences.

Common Symptoms & Causes

Symptoms can vary depending on the location and severity of the herniated disc. Common symptoms may include:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Pain that travels into an arm or leg
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stiffness or restricted movement
  • Increased discomfort with certain movements or positions

How Does Physiotherapy Help With Herniated Discs?

Physiotherapy begins with an assessment of your symptoms, movement, strength, flexibility, and functional limitations. Your physiotherapist can use this information to develop an individualized treatment plan based on your presentation and goals.

Treatment may include therapeutic exercises, mobility work, strengthening exercises, movement education, and manual techniques where appropriate. Your physiotherapist may also help you understand how certain activities, positions, or movement patterns affect your symptoms.

At Care & Cure Physiotherapy, patients from GuildfordNewtonScott Road, and North Delta can access personalized physiotherapy for herniated discs from our conveniently located Scott Road clinic.

Depending on your assessment, treatment may also incorporate Joint & Spinal Mobilizations and other physiotherapy approaches to support movement and function.
