What causes whiplash?
A neck injury called whiplash results from the neck moving back and forth suddenly and violently. This kind of injury typically happens in a car accident (MVA). The neck's muscles and tendons are stretched and torn as a result of the unexpected strain. Sometimes it takes a few days before whiplash symptoms become noticeable. Pain, restricted neck movement, skin discomfort, and headaches are common symptoms.
How Does Physiotherapy Work for Whiplash?
Physiotherapy for whiplash begins with an assessment of your neck movement, strength, symptoms, posture, and functional limitations. Your physiotherapist will also consider how the injury occurred and how your symptoms are affecting your daily activities.
Treatment may include gentle mobility exercises, therapeutic exercises, strengthening, manual therapy, posture and movement education, and guidance on gradually returning to normal activities. Your treatment plan can be adjusted according to your symptoms and progress.
What Can Whiplash Physiotherapy Help With?
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Reduced neck mobility
- Muscle tension around the neck and shoulders
