What is chronic pain syndrome?

Chronic pain syndrome (CPS) is a complex condition involving persistent pain that can continue for an extended period, sometimes beyond the expected healing time of the tissues involved. Chronic pain is commonly described as pain lasting six months or longer, although the experience and duration can vary from person to person.

Chronic pain may develop after an injury, trauma, infection, or another identifiable source of pain. In some cases, however, people experience persistent pain without a clear history of injury or an obvious ongoing source of tissue damage. Because chronic pain can involve multiple contributing factors, its presentation can be different for each individual.

How Does Physiotherapy Work for Chronic Pain?

Physiotherapy begins with an assessment of your pain, movement, strength, physical abilities, and how your symptoms affect your everyday activities. Your physiotherapist can use this information to understand your individual limitations and develop an appropriate treatment approach.

Treatment may include therapeutic exercises, mobility work, strengthening, manual therapy, movement education, and guidance on gradually increasing physical activity. Your program can be adjusted according to your symptoms, abilities, and functional goals.
