What causes tendonitis?

Tendons, which connect muscles to bones, are strong, adaptable, fibrous bands of tissue. Tendonitis is the medical term for the inflammation, irritation, or tiny tearing of tendons. Tendons come in a variety of sizes, such as the delicate, minuscule bands in the hands or the thick, rope-like cords that hold the calf or thigh muscles in place. The disease typically develops for one of two reasons:

Overuse: A particular body motion is repeated too often.
Overload: When the intensity of a certain activity, like weightlifting, is abruptly raised.
